When Glenn and Vito first met each other around four years ago, they soon discovered a mutual understanding for life and design, and decided to create a place together that allowed them to express their shared perspective on quality lifestyle – out of this grew POP-UP BEIJING.
Hidden in Building 22 of Courtyard No.4, near Gongtibeilu, POP-UP BEIJING is vibrantly blossoming in its own unique way – from the moment you walk into the space, it’s almost like traveling in a time machine – naturally polished stone floors, vintage furniture from both the East and West, and the ticking of an antique wooden clock… all take you back to the good-old-times, warming your heart before you even realise it.
POP-UP BEIJING is a place for you to put time aside, and truly enjoy an interaction with life and pleasure. The space is carefully furnished with love – a rustic ice bucket quietly sitting next to a vintage dressing-room mirror, behind a vintage German typewriter where some succulents are growing and thriving. The neighbour of a life-sized modernist horse is a sophisticated Song-Dynasty vase. “Every one of these pieces is meticulously chosen by ourselves. We believe that each item here has its own unique personality and spirit, and that is what makes them so different from others,” said Vito. Every object is finely selected, re-designed and modified by the two of them. “This pair of vintage Shandong armchairs were originally a natural wood colour, but after being re-lacquered in red, they bloom in a completely different way,” said Vito.
Out of respect and love for nature, Glenn and Vito often use lots of natural or recycled materials in their work. Each piece that they have designed and renovated not only retains its original characteristics, but is often also given new function: old pipes, vintage wood panels, ceramics – these two creative minds always turn such inconspicuous pieces into some of the most stylish furniture and homewares.
The whole space is carefully divided into different zones with different functions – while the main showroom is filled with collector’s items and their stories, in the bar area downstairs, people can enjoy a cosy, comfortable afternoon, with a wine or a beer in their hand. Is POP-UP BEIJING a boutique store, a café, or a wine bar? In Glenn and Vito’s vision, POP-UP BEIJING is a place for you to experience special moments, as much as it is to discover special pieces for your life.
Surrounded by so many beautiful antiques, a cosy afternoon just slipped away without any of us noticing. As the weekly vintage movie night got underway, our minds drifted away with another old classic romance…

Q How do you define the style of POP-UP BEIJING?
A Here in POP-UP BEIJING, you can easily experience the concept of ‘East meets West.’ It’s a combination of subtle suggestion and bold statement, traditional and modern, as well as the vigorous and lively. It would be really difficult for anyone to define it in one specific style: from its very essence, it is a unique reflection of both of us.
Q What is your original intension in opening POP-UP BEIJING?
A Glenn and I have a very similar professional background, where we both previously worked in large international corporations, in consulting and design. Despite working in large companies on large projects, we believe that beauty often expresses itself in the small details. We love that, through POP-UP BEIJING, we can share our vision of a quality lifestyle, with our amazing friends and customers. We value communicating and sharing the feeling of our environment more, rather than merely focusing on sales.
Q Did you two design and style all the space by yourselves?
A Essentially, yes – after we collect vintage or antique pieces, we often fix or modify them, to make them better fit people’s lives. We also work with a lot of original designers. For example, we work with seven local jewellers in our POP-UP BEI-BLING collective. Each of them has a distinctive style, and every piece here is unique – pieces come and go, each waiting for its rightful lucky owner!
Q What kind of event do you usually host at POP-UP BEIJING?
A As well as Classic Movie Tuesday, we also have all different kinds of workshops, including jewellery-making, origami, Sunday Sip & Scribble, educational talks, and flea markets… Not long ago, we hosted a series of events to celebrate World Baijiu Day. If you haven’t properly tasted it yet, you’ll have no idea how delicious it can be!
